Blog Post #2 Work Readiness Skills at My Internship

Positive Impact:
Since it's taking me some time in order for my internship to kick off, I have instead thought and anticipated of two work readiness skills that would prove to be the most useful when working in a medical office such as the Novato Community Hospital. These skills include both the "Diligence" and the "Respect" traits. It is vital for an intern at a busy place such as a hospital to be sort of an independent worker and thinker because the hospital staff are normally in the middle of doing something important, and unless the question the intern is asking is very important, the intern must have to go off their own accord on numerous occasions, thus evoking a huge emphasis on being diligent. While diligence is important, respect is also crucial. Because the intern is working at a place that deals with a number of patients who are sick or worried, it is important that the intern must be respectful of all situations, patients, and opinions of the patients. If careful care is not taken, then it could jeopardize not only the internship, but patient care within the hospital.

However there are also two skills in which could hurt my internship or ability to work unless I improve upon them before they start, them being my ability to be professional and communicating effectively. Being professional has always been hard for me because I like to take time to crack jokes and just be myself, but I know if I do this initially at the hospital, the staff would not trust me with hard work since I wouldn't seem like I'm a serious worker. Also communicating effectively, sometimes I find it hard for me to get the right words out and this could hinder my ability to ask questions or get work done or tell my supervisor of any questionable occurrences. However, I'm sure by the time my internship starts I will be able to improve these traits and give my internship a great start that I would be looking forward to.

  1. I really like the examples you gave on why you need to be respectful and have diligence. For the negatives I sometimes feel the same way and I also had communicating effectively in my negative category, but I also like how you found ways that you could improve on it.

  2. Kuba, I agree with you on the fact that being diligent is very important during your internship, especially when you're working at a hospital or some place where it's busy and you have to figure a lot of things out on your own. I also agree with you about respect and how important it is in the work environment, especially when you're dealing with sensitive cases and patients. Communication is something that I struggled with especially towards the beginning of my internship, so it's something that you should definitely focus on and work on before you start. I know I struggled a lot at first with asking questions, so pushing yourself to get comfortable talking to your supervisor is really important. Hope everything goes well with your internship!
