Blog #2: Work Readiness Strengths and Weaknesses

I will be starting my internship next Tuesday, so I am unable to write about skills I have already use. However, I will anticipate my strengths and weaknesses.

Successful skills:
I am a diligent worker in general. As a perfectionist, I like to double check my work and make sure everything is done to the best of my ability. I think this is going to be especially true in the medical setting, where any small mistake can lead to magnified consequences. I will show my diligence by giving my full attention to the task as I shadow my supervisor so that I can use those learned skills when I am allowed to have hands-on experience. I also do not feel comfortable being confused, so I will ask clarifying questions whenever applicable.
I also believe myself to be a very professional person. I always have to be on time or early. I have always liked to dress more formally, so I am ready to come prepared with pencil skirts and button-ups. I put all my energy into the tasks given, so I'm sure my participation will reflect my professionalism. I may be challenged if my task has a lot to do with speaking with others because I am naturally shy and can be anxious about some communication or making a mistake.

Challenges:
My major challenge will probably be communication. As I stated, I am shy so I don't like talking to others often. Hopefully, this won't be too much of a challenge because I tend to feel more comfortable when given a task and am expected to say certain things. I also can understand and give tasks clearly. My main drawback is that I tend not to be very bubbly and enthusiastic, which may be perceived as unfriendly when I visit patient's rooms.

  1. I know how you feel! I don't feel comfortable making mistakes, and I am also working on improving my communication skills. I'm shy and quiet, and I'm hoping to remedy that by working with the other patients. I hope everything works out for you!
