Blog #2: Applying Work Readiness Skills

Work Readiness Skills at Marin General Hospital

Positive:
1. Professionalism

At Marin General Hospital I have to dress very professionally. Everyday I wear dark colored dress pants and a long sleeved shirt with a collar and buttons. Also, I wear flats, or comfortable tennis shoes because of the amount of walking around the hospital I have to do. In addition, I need to wear my badge above my waist.

2. Tolerance and Respect-

When I first started working at Marin General, I had to meet many new people in the pharmacy department. There were many older people who had much less energy than me, and I was not sure how to work with some of them. However, I still respected them because they are part of the department and their work is very valuable to the patients and doctors. I had to be tolerant with everyone I was working with, and respect the hospitals recourses as well as the patients that I encountered.

Negative:
1. Communication

When I first began working at Marin General I was very shy and I was afraid to ask questions because I thought that I would sound stupid. However, it resulted in me making silly mistakes because I was not clarifying instructions in the beginning. After a short amount of time I began communicating very effectively and my work was much easier. I have learned that you should not be afraid to meet new people and ask questions because it can save you from making mistakes that could have been prevented with clarifying questions.

  1. It's great that you realize what you need to work on. Just remember to stay relaxed and go out of your way to talk to people. I'm shy at my internship too but i've realized that if i don't communicate than i won't learn as much.

  2. The same thing happened to me; I was very shy when I first started my internship. I now am trying to introduce myself to as many people as I can, especially doctors. And don't be afraid to ask questions, it shows that you care!

  3. I like how you explained communication at the end. Have fun at Marin General!
