Positive Situations
I have not officially started my internship at the Novato Community Hospital yet, but I am hoping to begin next week. I have, however, demonstrated my Work Readiness Skills at the New Employee Orientation, and at the interview with my internship supervisor, Sandy LaScuola. During these events, I exhibited my professionalism and dedication is positive ways that further supported my success, and I am hoping to demonstrate them during my internship this summer.
During my interview, I demonstrated my professionalism and my understanding of Sandy's directions. I wanted to show Sandy that I am a trustworthy, dependable, and considerate intern. I dressed according to the guidelines, acted with decorum, and made sure to express my respect for a individual of her authoritative position, as well as to make evident my willingness to cooperate with the NCH, and my interest for the internship. By maintaining appropriate manners and respect, I hope to earned her trust and respect. Hopefully, my decorum at this interview will be conducive for my future success in this internship, which I am hoping to continue into the fall semester. I
During my lengthy Employee Orientation, I made sure to demonstrate my professionalism, dedication, and literacy. Again, I made sure to look presentable and appropriate, and show my respect for the individuals in the conference room, which included nurses, dietitians, privacy and health officers, and the human resources manager. It was a mature atmosphere, and that shook my nerves, but I was determined to present my dedication. Especially when it was time to complete the online training, I used my literate skills in order to complete it successfully. I hope to have made a positive first impression on these individuals, and I want to keep displaying my positive skills in the future.
In both of these situations, I learned that putting forth your professional self will definitely support success in a mature atmosphere, especially if you want to make a positive first impression. I learned how it feels to be surrounded with these individuals, and what I can do to feel comfortable!
Negative Situations
In terms of Work Readiness Skills, I could use some improvement, especially with my communication skills. I am determined to expand my repertoire, and eventually be capable of displaying multiple Readiness Skills that will support my reputation. I tend to be quiet and reserved, and it is difficult to open up to people and socialize effectively in different atmospheres. I think that the lack of skill in this area will serve as a setback in the hospital, but I am hoping to remedy this problem with this internship.
In both the Employee Orientation and my interview, I hesitated to ask questions, thinking that my questions were not worth their time. I don't want this to be an issue, so I have to work diligently in order to better this skill. Since I have yet to officially begin my internship, I will be focusing on improving my communication skills, and adding them to the list of skills that are improving.
Emily, I'm also really reserved so I'm working on the communication skills in a very formal environment as well. It's rough, good luck!
ReplyDeleteI understand the overwhelming desire to communicate the appropriate level of professionalism and dedication during the internship and the horrific interview. Good for you that you walked in there prepared; it sounds like you made a wonderful impression on your supervisor and they should be thanking their lucky stars that they have you as their intern. I also believe that communication is a weak point for many (including myself). Just remember to ask lots of questions - trust me, doctors really are not bothered by them!

ReplyDeleteCommunication skills was something I needed to improve upon as well, and up to now, believe I, and I don't doubt you, have proven to at least improve a little with it. :)
