These past six weeks have been some of the most helpful and influential weeks in my entire life, and I am so incredibly grateful for that. My internship has not only prepared me for the workplace, but it has helped me expand as a person. My time at Novato Community Hospital showed me how the hospital operates, what necessities there are to keep the hospital functioning perfectly, and what revolves around a doctor in a hospital. I worked with a team of professional employees who regularly are affiliated with hospital paperwork, and building positive relationships with them and regularly having friendly conversations with them help me to become better, in terms of my communication skills. These friendly relationships can also benefit in the future when I apply for a job because they can potentially assist me with the application process. When I started my first day, I thought that my job was pointless, only scanning papers for what felt like hours on end. However, as I progressed, I realized that without my work, the hospital would not be functioning as it was, mainly due to the fact that a lot of doctors would be put on the spot because of lost files. The pressure situations combined with the friendly atmosphere showed me not to take everything for granted and to keep an open mind when approaching a new experience.

The class that we took during the internship was almost as much help as the internship itself. I am extremely grateful that I had an incredible, professional teacher, Mr. Morales, to guide me and my peers through the six weeks. Without his leadership, I would probably still be looking strangely at LinkedIn, because he taught us how valuable of a tool that actually is. His lessons helped me to open up my eyes and mind even further, especially through the Waybook. The Waybook was what made me start to question things, and it opened up my mind to the thought of a new perspective on my life. His lessons were great and with this I express my gratitude to him.

I am grateful to have had this experience. Both the internship and the class. Doing my internship at Kaiser Permanente helped me learn a lot about the medial field and myself. I've realized how much I want to go into the medical. It has made me see that being a physician is something I really want to do. It also helped me see how hospital departments run. I have been able to see how doctors interact. The class helped me learn a lot about myself through the exploration quizzes. I have gotten to see how it is to go into the real world and getting a job. I have seen what it's like to write a resume and cover letter. I am grateful I got to experience both the internship and class.

All the experiences I've had in this class have made me grateful for the opportunity of not only being able to do an internship this summer, but for being able to take this class itself. It has given me a small taste of real-life. I think one of my favorite things we did in this class was when we were required to keep track of the money we spent vs. our income. It really had an impact on me and made realize how important budgeting is. As for my internship, my favorite thing was shadowing the medical assistants and the doctors. I got to watch a a procedure called a pretibial bursa treatment. Now that I have taken this course, I have a clearer understanding of how to carry out basic steps for acquiring a job and how to act professionally once you have acquired it. .
During the five week period we used an online site called Waybook. This is a site created to aid people in the adventure of self-discovery. The  result that stuck in my head the most was my result for "agreeableness." It stated that I 'neither tend to agree or disagree with people and I don"t always necessarily think about the other person's feelings before I speak. This surprised me because I had always thought I made a great effort to think about the other person's feelings in a conversation.
We analyzed current work readiness skills. The most important one to me was honesty. Like in most cases in life, honesty is usually the best and most correct way to go
We learned how to use a ton of different sites, including the above mentioned Waybook. We also used Google Sites,Linkedin, and Blogger.
I consider myself very lucky to have had this opportunity, knowing that there are not many studets who even have an option to something like this. The internship was already a blessing, but this class teaches students so much about life and getting where you want to be; It helps you set goals and what you plan to do to get there; It opens up the minds of adolescants and helps us realize that we are not children anymore, but young adults, and that there are classes (and people,) that asre willing to help us make that stressing transition

I am grateful for being given the opportunity to be an intern at Hospice Heartland. I learned a lot about the administrative side of office work. I am most grateful that everyone at Hospice was so welcoming and were happy to answer all of my questions. I look forward to the next weeks of my internship. I am most thankful that I was able to learn how to make a really great resume through the school to career class. I was very happy with how mine turned out and I know it will be very helpful in the future. I also enjoyed reflecting and learning more about myself through the quizzes and Waybook. I am also thankful that I learned how to improve my skills in communication through my internship as well as the school to career class.

I am thankful for so much this summer. This career academy class has really given me a reality check for the future that gives me the ability now to plan ahead. Coming into the class, I didn't have a clue HOW I was going to get myself out there in the job world. I now have tools like LinkedIn and the Career Readiness skill set under my belt as I prepare and seek future employment. The questionnaires on Waybook were like evaluations, and have really taught me some about myself; also reminding me of my true personal values that I need to keep in mind throughout my life. For example, the Values quiz, while I didn't necessarily agree with it labeling my values from most to least, reminded me what I value - traits and ideas I need to remember as I'm moving into my future.

While the class definitely cleared up the HOW of getting out there, and showed me WHO I am in an even greater sense, my internship in the Novato Community Hospital Pharmacy was an extraordinary opportunity I will never forget. Just the fact that I got the internship there I am grateful for because on a couple of my visits there, I talked with a couple pharmacy students who are on rotations there. They told me they were never able to get a pharmacy internship in high school and in college (undergrad), it was very difficult because so many people were applying for such positions. I'm so lucky to have a mom working at NCH, who cares about me enough to land this internship, and even luckier that the people in pharmacy are so kind and willing to allow me observe what they do. I really couldn't have gotten this internship without my mom, liaison Sita, and the willingness of my supervisor, Wendy and all the other amazing pharmacists I observed.

When I first started the internship, I had a VERY limited idea of what pharmacy really was, only knowing of a few drugs (that my family has taken) and of what I have observed when going to CVS Pharmacy - something completely different let me tell you. I barely even knew that it was a field that I wanted to go into, just that I had a slight interest in it as it is a form of healthcare kind of "behind the scenes" in a sense. I had ideas but only that. So I am especially grateful for this internship because of the fact that it cleared up my future path a little. Showed me the field and now allows me to make the decision. Is pharmacy a path I wish to pursue? It very well might, and I know for a fact that it lays even more so in my top choices for the future. Observing in the hospital pharmacy also gave me insight to the hospital environment, allowed me to meet many nice professionals, and lastly, finalized my decision to go into health care. IN SHORT, I am definitely pursuing a future path in health care, and it is mostly thanks to this internship and basically, everyone I either met or saw at Novato Community Hospital...including my mom....(Just to put it out there, my mom is not a pharmacist.)

My future just got..scarier...but also so much clearer as I understand financially how to pursue future jobs and pay off future expenses, as well as understand in greater detail how to create my resume, cover letter, and use LinkedIn. Basically, I'm so thankful for this opportunity of figuring out about myself and my future, and of creating goals to pursue.

Blog Post #4

  • The total of my future expenses each year are $25,356. I know this is logical because my primary sources for information are kiplinger.com.
  • According to educationportal.com I can likely count on making $240,000 each year in my future job as a orthopedic surgeon.  My education/training to get that job will cost $65,275 total for all years of training.
  • I want to save $4,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and $3,000 for retirement each year.  If I save $3,000 for retirement each year, by the time I am 65 years old I will have $120,000 plus interest.
  • Comparing my future income and expenses makes me think there is a lot of different expenses that I need to pay.

Blog #3 College Major

I am very grateful that I had this opportunity to be in the career pathway class and my internship at Aegis Living. In class I learned and discovered things I never knew before. I discovered my strengths that I have a strong belief and purpose of the universe. Also, my other strength says that I treat other fairly which I agree because it is important to be fair and square and give other people a chance. I learned that it is important to blog weekly in this class about our experiences. I am also grateful for this class because I now discovered what I want to major in when I go to college.
Mostly, I am very happy and grateful for my Internship because it made me realize what I really want to get and my internship at Aegis helped a lot and it served as my stepping stone. I am also grateful because I met a lot of really nice residents and workers there. My Internship helped me build my confidence and it was a great start! I love working with elderly people. I will never forget this experience. Both the class and my internship pushed me to think what I really want to be in the future. Thank you again for this incredible opportunity!

Ehhhh.... it's over already?!?!?! It's been six (ish) weeks? I guess the internship was so fun I lost track of time. Thank you short attention span for letting me find fun in small thing, examples include  poor attempts at juggling or joking around with residents (hey, laughter makes you live longer).

Ah, but now I must get onto the prompt (booooooooo). For things I'm greatful for, I guess it made me think as the future as a concrete thing which I need to plan for (even with my great aversion to plans in general). This class also allowed me fine tune my resume skills (which I offered to a friend who is job searching... come to think of it I need to check up on him...). Also I'm thankful that I was able to do something productful (spelling is wonk) over the summer and go through some interesting experiences (heck, my supervisor told me to check back once I'm 18 to see if I can get a part time job as a activity supervisor. Hah! Unlike within these blogs I can be super serious... when I want to...) I was also (lotta alsos) able to see that when you work and are dedicated throughout the day it really pays off (knew that already buuuuut).

I guess I'm just really thankful overall for what a rewarding expierence these six (ish) weeks have been (SAP OVERLOAD). This whole program was just amazing and I'm sad that the first time participating in it is going into my senior year (WHHYYYYY COULDN'T I OF DONE THIS BEFORE).

And with that I end my Holden Caulfield-esk blog post
Farewell for I won't write on you again,
Sarah

P.S. Holden (from class) if you are reading this I have a questiom. Were you named after Holden Caulfield?

P.P.S. If you are in my Tuesday afternoon class I am (probably) making fudge (different types) and if I do, any ideas on types?

P.P.P.S. I WORKED ON MY PROCRASTINATION GOAL IT IS NOT MONDAY NIGHT!!!!!...probably...

P.P.P.P.S Did you know P.S. means post script, you knowe after (post) what you have written (script)? Ahhhhhhh, I live random facts.

Blog Post #5: Grateful

From the Class
I came into this class with a very good idea of my values, what I wanted in life, and the pathway I had to follow in order to reach those goals. Because of this, every discovery activity reassured me (instead of helping me uncover a hidden facet of myself) that I already understood my strengths, weaknesses, passions, and personality. As another example: the financial lessons proved to me even more that I was an impulsive person who became a little too lenient with money when there were good sales or a very high rated product. While this was already known, because that this was pushed to the forefront of my mind I have began to decrease my spending tendencies. I must say that I was especially grateful for the blog groups. Even though the posts are/were quite tedious and something that just had to get done, it is nice to read about other’s medical aspirations and see the passion that everyone holds towards their desired fields of radiology, electrophysiology, surgery, and physical therapy to name a few. These posts, and the many comments, gave me confidence to keep pushing for a seat at a medical school where acceptance rates can be as low as 1.6%. There will be hardships (most of all the bloody cost of education in the United States), but I have been inspired by my fellow classmates to keep on powering through.

From the Internship
I once wrote about how my internship has resulted in a complete alteration to my sense of style, a bonus that my mom has claimed to be one of the “best things to have ever happened to me”. But to say that is all that I am grateful for would be to cheapen the experience. Under Pete and Ellen I was introduced to an aspect of the hospital that I was never informed of - the grueling hours spent in front of a computer screen wondering whether or not carpal tunnel is the explanation for the strange tingling in my fingers. In these few weeks I was allowed to sit in with an administrator as she planned three events simultaneously over email, interviewed a prospective MGH physician over the phone, plan a future meeting, and get more things done in half a day than I get done in a week. I learned the appropriate way to conduct myself in front of high profile clients, the self-discipline needed to complete monotonous and never ending assignments, the honesty needed to own up to mistakes that accidentally occur, and the fact that it will always be okay to ask questions and communicate misunderstandings. Overall, this experience gave me the skills to achieve in the future and I am very glad that I was given this opportunity.

Internship:
I am so grateful to have gotten the chance to experience what I did at Marin General Hospital this summer. It was an amazing opportunity and I was able to accomplish so many wonderful things. I met so many amazing people that gave me a lot of advice on pursuing a career in nursing. I am the most grateful that I was able to spend time in the Outpatient Infusion center. It was the most interesting part of my internship because of the incredible things I was able to experience. Being in the outpatient Infusion center made me realize how much I want to pursue a nursing career. I was able to experience what it was like to help patients and that was absolutely wonderful. I want to help people and by being in the Outpatient Infusion and the Medical unit I was able to see how far this can go.

Class:
I am very grateful for having taken this class while doing my internship at Marin General Hospital. Coming into it I did not think I would gain as much as I did from it. I learned so much about finance, career, and purpose. I was able to obtain a lot of important information that will definitely help me in the future. I was glad that I took this course during the time I was doing my internship mainly because of the work readiness skills. These skills showed me what I could improve on and what I was doing well in at my internship. Overall this course helped me in many ways and I am very grateful that it was given to me on top of the internship.

Class:

I am very grateful for my involvement in this class. This class has fully prepared me for what to expect when looking for any careers I would like to pursue. I would not know how to create a well written resume or cover letter or any of that sort of professional stuff. Without this class, I would not be familiar with any of the top ten skills needed in order to be successful in a workplace. However, aside from all the professionalism, this class more importantly taught me about myself. All those little quizzes and tests we took to determine our strengths and goals and values, I thought initially was a waste of time but now I realize they really do help me in the long run of visualizing who I am and what I want to become.

Internship

Although I can't necessarily speak for my whole entire internship experience, for it is a story not yet finished, I can say that I have learned so far what it's like being part of the medical system here in the U.S. Working in the lab, with all the science and the running of the tests aside, gave me an actual visualization of what responsibilities I need to undertake if I choose basically any career that the environment involves a real hospital with real patients that I would really be taking care. Had you asked me before hand if I would undertake such a big responsibility, a human life in the care of my hands, I would be terrified of all the mishaps, the mistakes I could make, that could harm the person I vowed to help more than it would harm me, but now I feel confident, with however much confidence a week could give me, and for that, so far, I truly am proud of myself.

What I am grateful for

Internship:
Interning at Marin General gave me insight about what it will be like to work in the medical field in the future.  I know I for sure want to become a doctor so I can help patients in the hospital.   Besides learning about medical professions, I learned about myself.  I found out that I like to be different and that I am a curious person.  I definitely saw this during my internship when I asked lots of questions in order to find out more about the medical field.  I was able to use work readiness skills in order to succeed at my internship.  Throughout the entire time, I was professional and I showed good communication skills.  I know I will be ready for my next internship because I acquired many skills that I will be able to use.  I was extremely fortunate to have an internship at a hospital.  I know they are very tough to get, and I am grateful for everything I learned.

Class:
I would have not been as successful as I was at my internship without taking this class.  The work readiness skills we learned on the first day of class prepared me very well for my first day at my internship.  Paying attention to the details of the skills and how they apply to everyday situations really does matter and it can help.  Not only did I learn many skills that will continue to help me with future jobs, now I also have a cover letter, a resume, a website and a Linkdin profile.  These will definitely come in handy when I apply for my next job.  I am extremely glad that I learned these skills early.  I also really enjoyed on reflecting on our personalities and our strengths and weaknesses.  Taking the different surveys and answering questions helped me discover more about myself and what type of person I am.

Blog Post #5: Being Grateful

Class
I am so grateful for the experiences that I have had with this class. At first I was quite scared going through with this class since I'm not much of a sociable person. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to interact with other kids well. I had a break through while taking this class and now I feel confident that I can interact with people. I also got to meet new people. This class pushed me to really think about the future and the things I want in life. For that I am grateful. It's a lot to think about especially with how close I am with finishing school.  Next thing I know, I'll be going to college... and medical school... and askdalskdjflakdsjfla doing all sorts of things to pursue my career.

Internship
I'm glad that I decided to do this internship.  On the first day that I officially started, the doctor that I was shadowing told me upfront that I need to be sure that I do want to be a doctor to be one.  He told me that if I was in it for the money, then I would be picking the wrong job. The doctors that I worked with emphasized that. They told me that I needed an actual reason to be a doctor because it is such an important job. Being able to do this internship has been such a wonderful experience. It definitely strengthened my interest in pursuing a career in medicine.  It's a whole new experience when a patient smiles at you with gleaming eyes because you have the chance to tell them that they're all better and that they are ready to go home. I've seen quite a lot of things at the hospital and never felt bored with spending six weeks of my summer there. I would definitely do it again. :)

I am so grateful for having the opportunity to participate in this internship and class. At first I was hesitant, i thought "Why should i do this? I want to hang out with friends all summer" but i decided this is my last summer to get things done before senior year and college. Id wasted every summer in high school and i wasn't about to waste this one. So i decided to be proactive and did the internship! Im so happy i did it, i really have no regrets. I'v learned so much and now have a better understanding of what i need to do. The class was also incredibly useful. Teens always complain about school and how it doesn't teach you how to do everyday essential things like taxes, and paying bills, but this class was exactly that! It taught me so much and i'v learned so much. Iv had friends coming up to me to help them write a resume and fill out a job application! during the class i noticed things i did wrong when applying to my first job, its crazy that i even got it but now that I've had experience and this class i feel confident for college and later in life. I am so grateful for this amazing opportunity.

Blog #5: Grateful

My experiences in my internship and the things I have learned in the Career academy have been extremely valuable.
I am grateful for the practical answers that the Career Academy gave to me. I now know how to search for what qualities a job is looking for and how to incorporate those qualities into a cover letter. I also feel much more confident in my future education and financial state after completing the assignments that had us research our future plans. Before this class, I was aware of the average income of people in my planned profession, but I only hoped that would be enough to cover my future costs (my parents said it wouldn't be, so I was really worried, but they were considering the cost of living in Marin with a family of four).
I am extremely grateful for the experiences I received in Novato Community hospital. Not only was I surrounded by extremely kind and caring professionals, but I was able to see the inner workings of a hospital environment. After a few weeks of working there, I am surprised at how well I was able to work independently without being told what to do by my supervisor.
I am most grateful for my experiences with the patients in the hospital. Before my internship, the greatest obstacle I faced in my plans on pursuing clinical dietetics was my fear and hatred of working with people, which is why I leaned more toward research and food science. Now that I have had the experience of working with patients, I have learned how kind and interesting most of them are. Though I did have a couple of difficult patients, the majority were unbelievably kind and appreciative. I am mostly encouraged by the happiness one particularly ill patient displayed after being promised a milkshake every day.

I am very grateful for all of the experiences I've gotten to have this summer in both this class and my internship. They have both taught me a lot about myself, as well as many lessons and skills that will definitely come in handy in the future.

Class:
I am so grateful that I got to be part of this class this summer, even if it only was once a week for six weeks. It really helped me get ready to join the professional world by teaching me how to write a cover letter, resume, fill out a job application, and introducing me to linked in. I know that everything that I learned in this class will be so vital for me in the future, so I am so grateful that I got to be a part of it and learn and practice all of these new lessons this summer. I also learned the importance of setting goals for myself, and how they can help keep me on track to a achieve what I want. I am confident that now I will have an upper hand on my peers when applying for jobs and creating resumes because of everything that I learned in this class, and that is something that I'm very grateful for.

Another reason I am grateful that I got to be part of the class this summer was because it taught me so much about myself. Through all of the Waybook tests and discoveries, I learned so much more about myself and my personality, passions, and values. This class also got me thinking in a lot greater depth what I really want my future to look like and the steps I can take to achieve these goals. The long term planning exercises and blogs that required me to think 10 or 15 years into the future really gave me a reality check and required me to reconsider and really think through what I want for myself.

Internship:
I am so grateful for having the opportunity to intern at Marin General in the Center for Integrative Health and Wellness this summer. Although the internship wasn't what I had expected at first, it was so much fun, and I met so many amazing people. During my internship, I did a lot of administrative work and helped out many different people in the department with their projects. This helped show me that although it was a great experience and a lot of fun, I'd rather be doing something in the hospital that is more hands on than administrative work. Overall, it was an amazing internship, and I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to work with the people in that department this summer, because I made a lot of connections and learned a lot about myself.

I am so grateful for all the learning experiences I've had this summer. I was impressed with the work we did in the classroom. I often feel I'm wasting my time in classrooms, but I the Work Readiness Class was useful to me. I thought it was helpful to work on getting to know myself and think about setting goals before I have to start applying to college. Work Readiness class came just in time for me to learn how to be professional and how to be an adult before I'm on my own.

I'm grateful for my internship because it provided me with a place to practice what I learned in class. I had to stay on top of all my work readiness skills. But more than that I was able to learn a lot about Hospice. My day shadowing the social worker was really important to me. She gave me a new insight into what she really does, what it's like to take care of and communicate with someone who is dying and may not be able to express themselves in words. I admired her perspectives and I'm very grateful to her.

Blog Post #5: Grateful

Class: I am very grateful that I took this class. I learned so much abut finances and business that I wouldn't have learned anywhere else. Sometimes my dad will teach me little lessons here and there about careers and finances, but this class made me really understand how the finance world worked better than other source. I thought it was really great how we had to fill out real life applications, write a resume and a cover letter. I'm grateful that we had to actually fill them out instead of just listening to a lecture about them. The class was very hands on. I'm really grateful that we set up a LinkedIn account, because I didn't think it was a big part in the business world. I am also grateful that this class helped me discover more about myself. The way book tests were a really great way to see my strengths and weaknesses on a chart, and where I can improve.

Internship: I am also very grateful to have been given the opportunity to work at Marin Generals Human Resources Department. When I applied for the internship, I didn't think I was going to get in. But I am so glad that I did. It gave me a real life setting of what HR does, and showed me what direction I wanted to go. I realized that I don't want to go into the business side of the medical field, but instead be a doctor. I am also very grateful for this experience because I had to dress professionally everyday I worked, so it really felt like a job. It was great how the business and finance class went hand in hand with the internship. I worked on the all the work readiness skills and tried to improve on at least at one of them each day. I am so happy that we had to take the class and internship because we applied everything I learned in the class to my internship.

Blog #5: Grateful -- Class and Internship

This summer, I am incredibly thankful for choosing to experience this Career class and Hospital Internship. Both of these were major learning experiences for me, and I learned so much more about myself, technology, and the career world.

CLASS
I am very grateful for the explorations and discoveries that took place in this class, especially during the Waybook questionnaires. At the beginning of this course, my technology skills were awful; I had never heard of LinkedIn or created a Google Site. Now, I have more technology tools to add to my repertoire. In addition to learning more technology, I learned so much more about myself. I learned that I am conscientious and timid, but dedicated nonetheless, according to my Waybook entries. My perspectives on the world also evolved throughout this course. My financial perspectives changed for sure, but I was also able to identify my values and my WHY, which I thought was an interesting activity. I'm glad I had the opportunity to think deeply about this now, before I'm on my way to college. This class gave me the chance to think about my future expenses, decisions, and career path. I found these to be very beneficial, and I will continue to share these ideas with family and friends.

INTERNSHIP
My internship is not over, because I will be continuing for two to three more weeks before school starts. I decided to do this because I started a little late, and because I enjoy going to the Novato Community Hospital every Thursday. I finally had the chance to experience a hospital setting after hearing stories from my older brother, who also interned at the Novato Community Hospital when he was in high school. Now, he is interning at another hospital before heading to medical school! These past few weeks, we've been exchanging stories about what we did at the hospital, and what it was like for us. My peopling skills improved so much! Even though it is still intimidating to be a mature atmosphere, I feel more comfortable than what I used to feel. My communication skills improved greatly. At the hospital, I had to answer numerous phone calls, and, at first, I was nervous to speak to people whom I don't know, but it was an excellent learning experience. I know that I won't grow out of my shyness, but I feel so much more comfortable and open around adults. I used to think that hospital employees were strict people, but there is more positivism and laughter than I thought there would be. This is type of place I definitely want to work in the future; it's perfect! This opportunity allowed me to explore something new and meaningful; it is something that will surely open doors for me as I begin to apply for colleges during senior year. I am incredibly thankful for this opportunity at the NCH. Compared to other children who don't have the resources to do activities like this, I feel lucky. It was a huge stretch for me, because my mother is a single mother with a morning and evening job, and adding my internship program to her schedule was definitely a strain, but I made it. I am very, very grateful for this summer!

I am very grateful for many experience and lesson I learn  on summer. Both class and internship help me to get ready for my future that I want to do.

Class

I am grateful for this class because I learn a lot of things like readiness towards my future goals, for example how to make a resume, cover letter, fill out a job application, make my own website, and how to use LinkedIn. One of the most important lesson that I remember is that I learn how to research the type of class I need to do for the specific job I want, what type of budget I have to prepare myself the needs and wants, and what important things I should buy or don't buy. Another lesson that I learn is how on the beginning of the class what I should wear on the job and what I shouldn't do and should do for example being honest towards the job if I lie to a certain situation that may fire you on a job. they teach us a lot of important things that I'm glad that I know a lot of stuff during this summer that helps me towards my goal in the future. So thank you Mr.Morales for all your lesson that I learn so much.

Internship

This Internship was a great experiences I have ever learned. I was pretty nervous when I first came in and thinking what I should do because I was so quite, thinking what should I say and do but so far I think all the lesson I learn on the class of what I should do and shouldn't for example one of the resident asked me to speak louder yet I tried to speak louder and clearly for her but I tried my best to say it properly and it took me time to practice and that is one of I learn is how I can improve my social skills towards people. I had fun talking to resident and show them to have a great time towards the activities such as balloon volley ball, Daily walk, Tia chi, seat dance, and flower arrangement with the resident. I learned a lot on the internship and it showed me how I should take care my time and being careful at work.

I am very grateful for all of my experiences this summer in order to get ready for my future. I feel much more aware of what I need to do for the future I want.

CLASS
I learned a lot from this career readiness class. I learned how to make a resume, cover letter, fill out a job application, make my own website, and how to use LinkedIn. I also got to research about the type of schooling I will need in order to achieve the career I want. That was one of the most important parts of this class. I now understand what I need to in school in order to become the type of nurse I want to be. I also found out a lot about my personality and work habits. I learned that I work well with people and that i would rather fit in than stand out. It was useful to create a plan for my life and figuring out when I should achieve goals in my life and find something to look forward to. I now understand what my future should be like and what to do with my life.

INTERNSHIP
My internship was a great experience. I got to help with rooming patients, stocking rooms, and working on patients with my advisor. I didn't even know that ostomy and wound care existed until I started this internship. It was hard at first because I didn't know what I was getting myself into, but after the first week it became really interesting. Although I don't think I will become a wound/ostomy nurse, I now know what it is like to work with patients, what it is like to work in medical offices and what certain products do to certain wounds. I learned a lot from this internship and it has really opened my eyes to the medical field and what it will be like to work in it one day.

Class:
In the past 6 weeks that I have been attending these career readiness classes, I have learned so much and have gained a new perspective on my future. I have learned and practifed making an effective resume, coverletter and job application. I have also been supplied with the skills and qualities needed to be successful in a future career. This class really put to light the importance of the top 10 skills and qualities we learned about the first few weeks of class. We have been taught the need for connections and allies especially ones like from our internship. With only 18 hours spent in a classroom this summer, we are much more prepared than our other classmates and we are walking out of this with
not only college credit, but with the knowledge, skills, and paperwork to be successful in the future. This class truly has made me career ready!

Internship:
My internship was in the eduction department of MGH. Before this summer, I always talked about doing something like this where I could be in a medical environment surrounded by people who specialize in the subjects I am interested in. I never thought I would actually experience this in real life but this summer has proven me wrong. I am so appreciative of these last few weeks because they have played a significant role in my career options and choices. Before going into this internship, I knew I wanted to do something in the medical field but I wasn't sure what. As I prepare to leave, I walk out knowing that I do not want to sit at a desk all day long and do office work much like what j soent doing this summer. I now know that I want to do something more hands on and interactive. Overall, this experince was completely awesome and has truly motivsted me to keep a connection with MGH next summer as a volunteer.

Blog Post #5: Grateful

I am grateful for many of my experiences this summer. Both the class and internship helped to make this summer an unforgettable one.

CLASS
I am grateful for this class because it introduced me to the career world. Before the class began, I never had a job nor did I know what cover letters and Linkedin were. But now, I have a better grasp on all of these things. When I need to apply to jobs in the future, I feel like I have an upper hand on my peers because this class has given the tools I need to succeed. It has taught me about resumes, cover letters, job applications, and Linkedin, but more importantly, it has taught me how to utilize these things and why they are important.

I am also grateful for this class because it taught me so much about myself. Using Waybook helped me understand my strengths, passion and personality. I now understand  It was a great tool for me to sort out my thoughts, and quite literally sort out my life. If you asked me 6 weeks ago, what I want to do 15 years from now, I would respond with, “I don’t even know what I want to do one year from now.” Therefore, the long-term goal planning exercises really forced me to think more in depth about my future. I am grateful for this because it really helped me to see the bigger picture. This big picture is a scary one at that, but I am glad that this class instructed us to make these goals because it was a great reality check that I truly needed.

INTERNSHIP
I am very grateful for having the opportunity to intern at Asher Clinic in conjunction with this class. Learning the work readiness skills in class then utilizing them at my internship was great practice for future employment. Also, discovering my strengths and assessing my weaknesses helped me learn so much about myself. For that, I am grateful.

More importantly, my internship helped me to assess what I want to do with my life. Coming into the internship, I had little knowledge of physical therapy, but I knew that it was an interest of mine. After 5 weeks of interning, I feel like I have such a good understanding of physical therapy, both the good and the bad. Seeing it in action each week, I fell in love with anatomy, physiology, and the modalities of physical therapy. It is all so extraordinary to me. However, I also saw the not so fun sides of physical therapy: the odd personalities, laborious documentation, and hassling with insurance companies. Nonetheless, everything I did and observed just gave me so much more respect for what physical therapists do. I now know what I want to do with my life -- I want to pursue the field of exercise science and one day become a physical therapist. I have the Career Pathway Academy and Asher Clinic to thank for that, so thank you!

This summer has given me some amazing opportunities and experiences that I would never have gotten if it weren't for this class and this internship. I learned so much, met new people, and discovered more about myself.

Class
Although this class was only once a week for six weeks, I learned almost as much as a whole semesters worth of material. Coming into this class I didn't really know much about resume's and cover letters and I especially wasn't very knowledgable about finance. I learned how to be career-ready and I gained some work readiness skills that will help me in my future as well. The most important thing I learned through this class was probably about myself. We set goals and took many tests that showed us who we are and what are skills are. I determined my passions and personality, and it opened my eyes to the different opportunities that I can benefit from with these skills.

Internship
This internship was one of the greatest learning experiences I have ever had. I came into the internship thinking that I would just be making copies and filing papers, but I got to experience a whole a lot more. In the beginning I started out doing administrative things, but towards the end I got to see surgeries and shadow different doctors. I saw lung, spine, and hip surgeries, and I also got to spend one day in the ICU helping the nurses. I experienced a hospital routine and the daily lives of doctors, and it made me want to become a doctor SO bad! There's nothing else I can imagine myself doing. I am so thankful for this internship and now I want to do as many things as I can in the hospital, even if it's just volunteering.

Blog post #5

I was very thankful for this Career Readiness class. I learned a lot about myself, as well as my career preference. In this class, we took many tests that determined our personalities, goals, and strengths. Through these exams, I realized that I am a very cooperative person. I am very social and I work well with others. I also learned that I am organized, polite, and professional. This class also helped me understand and also look forward to my career preference. Some of the assignments in the class required us to research into our careers we aspired to achieve. I learned that a doctor, the occupation I aspire to be, makes a satisfying amount of money. It also has good job security as well. I would never have found out these things if it were not for this class.

I was also very happy with my internship. As I have said previously, I want to be a doctor when I grow up. Because of this, I took an intern ship at Sutter Health Novato Community Hospital. I helped in the Med Surg department, answering callights, helping patients, filing, etc. This position helped me become more satisfied with becoming a doctor. I became more comfortable in a hospital setting, and the idea of helping people is much more inviting as well. I am very glad I did this internship.

This program has been one of the most productive summer things I have ever done! Thanks Mr. Morales!

Blog #5: Grateful

I am grateful to have been involved in this summer internship and have learned so many new things, not only in my job if not in class too.

  • From the class, I am grateful to have learned more about myself and what I can do, for example; I can contribute ideas that can benefit me as well as others, I can try harder to achieve better results, I can set goals that I can achieve and I can make plans that will be very useful to achieve everything I want to do in the future. I am also grateful to have learned about different things that will help me in the future as; how to make a cover letter and a resume and how It could help when applying for future work. Budgeting is one of the best decisions you can take to help yourself with your expenses. And finally I am grateful to have met different people, and we have become allies.
  • In my internship at the Marin Community Clinics I am grateful to have learned that having a job is not only a career and do a few tasks at work, but you have to be professional in every way; dress appropriately, arrive on time, having a good relationship with your co-workers and have to strive to give your best every day. And I'm also grateful to have met different staff of the clinic who helped me to know, understand and appreciate more the work and services that are required for the patient to have the best service possible.
  • In both, the classes I took during these five weeks and the work done in my internship, I learned that it is important that you work hard for you to accomplish what you propose, and that this opportunity given to me changed my life because now I can consider myself as dedicated, professional, honest, tolerant and respectful. And I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity that many people would like to have and have used my summer productively.

Grateful

I am very grateful for everything that has happened to me this summer. I have had some amazing experiences that I will never forget, and will be able to take with me to my next job. I have learned so much

CLASS
This class has been very beneficial to me for multiple reasons. First, it has allowed me to better understand the career world and what it is like as well as what is required of one to be able to succeed. I learned how to make a proper resume, a cover letter (which I never knew about before this class), and also learn to fill out a proper job application. I am very grateful that I have had the opportunity to learn all of these things and do them for practice before they actually matter, because it will make me that much better at them when I actually have to submit these things in the future. Learning these things really helped me become more confident, and I am very grateful for that. Being able to outline my goals for the future in a detailed manner, really helped me understand myself and figure out what my true values are and how I am going to achieve these goals.
I learned a lot about myself through the several personality tests we did, as well as being able to document my strengths, values, personality, biology, and passion on Waybook. Waybook was a great way for me to sort out my goals, and really helped me discover things about myself that I hadn't really thought about before. Also, I am very grateful to have learned about career readiness skills, and judge myself on what still needs improving and what I am already good at. For example, from this class I realized that I am actually a very effective communicator, but need to work on my professionalism. There are so many things this class has taught me about the career world and I am very grateful for all that I have learned this summer.

INTERNSHIP
This internship was the first real job I have ever had. It was definitely the highlight of my summer. I am very interested in the medical field, and this internship allowed me to explore the many different fields inside medicine and decide what is for me and what is not. I absolutely loved it. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity and be able to further explore the field that I am interested in. I have learned so much from this internship, and from it I have come to the conclusion that I want to be a surgeon. I have always wanted to go into pharmaceutical development or pediatrics, however during this internship I was able to go down to surgery a lot and witness remarkable surgeries while my supervisors were putting away drugs, and I am very grateful for that. Even though I had to do some boring things such as organizing drugs, it was still an internship of a lifetime. I absolutely loved working at Marin General Hospital, and I am now absolutely sure what I want to do with my life. I am also grateful for this opportunity because it de-mistified what it was like to work in a hospital, and really helped me step into other peoples shoes for once. It was an amazing internship and I will never forget it.

Grateful

In class, I discovered the value of setting goals. I already had a tendency for making lists to stay organized, but I found it very beneficial to write my goals, habits, and allies down. It has helped me look at the bigger picture, while also focusing on what I have to do now to reach those goals. I’m thankful that we were all given the opportunity to get internships that will help us figure out what we want to pursue, and that it has put us ahead of our peers. As the news article said, we really are getting a leg up, which I am especially grateful for in the competitive field of medicine .

From my internship I learned the importance of double checking your work, and the impact it can have if you don’t. In the department I worked in, I observed many meetings of mistakes made by doctors and how their small missteps affected their patients. I can learn from their mistakes to make myself a better doctor in the future, and even make myself a better student by taking my time on assignment and triple checking them.

I also learned I never want an office job. Some people can sit at a computer for hours, but I’d much rather be running around to patients. I’m thankful for the opportunity because there was always that 0.1% of doubt that made me wonder if being a surgeon was the career path the I wanted to follow. After this experience there is nothing I’d rather do. Although I still wanted to explore the different job options in the medical field, such as radiology and anesthesiology, I know now that I 100% want to go to medical school and do something in healthcare.

It also allowed me to sharpen my career readiness skills. I have had a bad habit of not asking questions and trying to figure it out myself. During my internship I asked dozens of questions every day and it helped me learn a lot more. I asked questions because I worked with very delicate information and wanted to make sure it was done properly. My communication skills still have room for growth but it is something I can continue to work on during the school year by asking my teachers questions and taking Oral Rhetoric. I also had to get very comfortable with Excel. I had had little experience with it before this internship and I can now be more prepared for future situations.

Blog Post #5: Thankful & Grateful

Thankful and Grateful

One thing I am grateful from this class is that we were able to learn how to be work ready, so that in the future we can have an advantage from everyone. Also, I am grateful that Mr. Morales took his time to teach, even though it is summer. I am grateful for being able to use Waybook to learn about my strengths, values, passions, and personalities. I am glad that I was able to plan out for the future, and hopefully I can reach my goals and be financially stable.

One thing I am grateful from my internship at Kaiser is that I was able to experience the medical field and see many procedures. Also, I am grateful for having an awesome oppurtunity to help others. I was able to improve my skills and become more professional.

If I hadn't done this program of 5 weeks, I would have been different.
- I would have not known more about me
- I would have wasted my summer doing nothing
- I would have not known more about careers out there in the world

Now...
Through this I found out that I don't want to be an office person. I like to interact with others and help them out. I want to be more active, and therefore I am grateful.  I think I might become a surgeon.

An addition,
I am thankful that this program was able to fill up some holes that I had and plant seeds that made me grow, and in the future the plant will give out its fruit.

Thank You!

Work Readiness Skills

Success:

Honesty

I used one of my work readiness skills, which was honesty, at my internship in the last couple of days. I used honesty when I was asked to pull up a patients X rays on one of the computers. To be able to do that one of my bosses had to sign into the program but she wasnt in the room and I didnt know where to start looking for her. Instead of running around the section of the hospital where I work at I just sat staring at the computer waiting for her to get back. When she got back she asked if I had pulled the X rays, I had to be honest and explain to her that I hadnt been able to. She completely understood and just logged into the system for me.

Professional

Another work readiness skill I used was professionalism. Sometimes working in the casting room can be a little chaotic. You see impatient, crying children but you also see irritable adults that do not want to be there. When you work with these people you need to have patience to work with them. It can get hard at times but you shouldnt show that to the patients.

Held Me Back:

Diligence

Sometimes I forgot to do certain things like get the papers for the doctors or cleaning up the beds. After a patient leaves I get wrapped up in thinking about what their injury that I forget to clean up the bed.

Dedication

Sometimes I'll take a little long to get ready and I'll be late by a couple of minutes. It never gets in the way of what anyone is doing but it's something I need to work on.

Finance Goals

Assuming that everything goes according to how I have planned it, I hope in ten years or so after graduating from medical school, I will have a steady-paying job, and will be comfortably situated somewhere in Los Angeles. I hope to go to UCLA for my undergraduate studies, and then transfer to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for my graduate studies.
  • The total of my future expenses each year are $70,000.  I know this is logical because my primary sources for information are http://www.welikela.com/cost-of-living-in-los-angeles/.
  • According to http://work.chron.com/potential-salary-plastic-surgeon-6625.html I can likely count on making $500,000 each year in my future job as a plastic surgeon.  My education/training to get that job will cost $283,500 total for all years of training. This is according to http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-medical-schools/johns-hopkins-university-04043.
  • I want to save $5,000-7,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and $25,000 for retirement each year.  If I save $25,000 for retirement each year, by the time I am 65 years old I will have $850,000 plus interest.
  • Comparing my future income and expenses really puts things into perspective for me. I have been looking at the different websites, and I see the costs of different types of things, such as food and clothes. It gives me a sense as to what I need to do in my life, and how hard I need to work to achieve my goals.

Blog 4

If my goals go as I plan them right now, the following will be around the total expense for education and living in California comfortably. I'm only considering myself as singly making my own living and not considering the idea that I might have a family by then or whatever. The prices below are estimates because of the fact that I might attend different colleges (with varying tuitions) and earn financial aid. etc.

  • The total of my future expenses each year are around $324,000 - including education as an undergraduate and pharmacy school if that is still my desired path, also including the average expenses for a California citizen as according to the "Living Wage Calculator" on livingwage.mit.edu - a site that logically states average expenses and wages for those living within a specific area.
  • According to <payscale.com> I can likely count on making around $120,000 each year in my future job as a Pharmacist.  My education/training to get that job will cost about $180k total (not including undergraduate) for all years of training.
  • After reading a very nice article on <nerdwallet.come> I decided I would like to save around $1-2,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and at least $20,000 for retirement each year.  If I save at least $20,000 for retirement each year (starting at age 27), by the time I am 65 years old I will have a minimum of $760,000 plus interest. (considering if I were to stay single and without family for my whole life, I would raise the $20k to have a more comfortable living upon retirement. I hope that's not the case!)
  • Comparing my future income and expenses makes me realize the reality of what my future holds, and look at my goals not so much as fancies for what I want to do, but actually realities that can happen if I set my mind to achieving them.

Blog #4: Future Expenses and the Ideal Plan

Assuming that I graduate from college and finish medical school, in about 10 years or so I would be doing residency at a hospital. I would be working on my three years of internal medicine residency. Obviously this is only possible if I don't take any breaks from my studies.

  • According to the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, yearly expenses for a single adult living in Los Angeles estimates to about $30,000 give or take a couple thousands depending the area a person may be living in.

  • According to glassdoor.com, I can likely count on making about $60,000 each year in my future job as a internal medicine resident.  My education/training to get that job may amount to about $300,000.

  • I want to save about $20,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and about 15% of my salary each year for retirement. If I do end up making about $60,000 during residency, I would be looking at about $9,000 a year. Of course the amount shall increase if my earnings increase as well. For example, if I save $9,000 for retirement each year starting my residency year (I'll be turning 27), by the time I am 65 years old I will have saved up about $342,000. Here are my random math thoughts for even farther into the future:
  • Since I want to become a Cardiac Electrophysiologist, the yearly earnings for that estimates to about $600,000+ a year.  By the time I achieve that position, I will be about 33-34 years old. The amount I will be saving will be increased to about $90k a year. Assuming I would actually save 15% of what I would be earning a month. It's overwhelming to think I would need to save about $7.5K a month from what I would be earning. Though, if successful, in 31-32 years or so (I'll be turning 65) I would have been able to save about $2.8M.

  • Comparing my future income and expenses makes me think… that for a long long long long long long time.... I will be living in a cardboard box living off of $1 Maru-chan cup noodles. All of this is absolutely overwhelming. This is the plan if nothing bad happens that will lead me to use money for other purposes. As of now... this is the ideal plan. Whether or not it's achievable... I have no idea. I WILL TRY. Not to mention education debts that I will need to pay each month. This is so overwhelming....

Blog #4

  • The total of my future expenses each year are about $70,000.  I know this is logical because my primary source for information is http://www1.salary.com/registered-nurse-Salary.html
  • According to http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Registered_Nurse_(RN)/Hourly_Rate I can likely count on making $82,000 each year in my future job as a registered nurse. My education/training to get that job will cost roughly around $20,000 to $30,000 total for all years of training.
  • I want to save $10,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and $20,000 for retirement each year.  If I save $20,000 for retirement each year, by the time I am 65 years old I will have around $600,000 plus interest.
  • Comparing my future income and expenses makes me think about how important it is to know my expenses and know how to budget my money wisely in the future.

Blog #4

...
......
I'm just gonna sit in my corner and mope now...
Why is the future so expensive...
(List of resources on bottom of page)

So if I thinks ahead 10 years into the future I... will still be in school... well more like going into my second year of a Anatomic Pathology Residency. My annual salary while in residency, the average, will be $58, 914 for three-four years then I will move onto a fellowship, hopefully.

Nooooooow thinking backwards... School costs are expensive and very disheartening... First, I will go to a JC for two years (take that Mr. Morales, you do have slackers in this class!!!) then I will transfer over to a four year collge. Finally, after that I will, hopefully, get into Med School (Yes, I am planning on ditching my slacker ways... tomorrow (darn you procatinating ways)). By doing a rough estimate the total cost of school, only not including housing, will be around $203,984... I'm not even going to go into student loans costs, that will make me even more downtrodden... Thankfully I am lucky and my Grandparents have set a college fund in place and that will... hopefully... take away some of that cost... hopefully...

Anyway if I look to the future and start planning for retirement, by using my amazing mathematical skills, I should put away at least $18,000 a year after I achieve my job, approximently age 33. By age 65, but who are we kidding the age of retirement will probably be around 75 when we get that age, I will have about $600,000 in saving, not including intestrest (which hopefully will be doubling the money invested each year, which I know is impossible but can't someone dream!!!)

For yearly spending... I have no idea... it will widely depend on the state I end up going to, somewhere on the East Coast, and the starting salary will also depend on where I land and the job salary I gain, as it also varies like with every job. As for my rainy day fund.. whatever isn't a necessity such as lights, water, food, and housing. I am a big believer in saving for emergencies and can be extremely frugal... when I want to be...

Farewell till I write on you again,
Sarah
(I'm just going to fall asleep in the corner now out of sadness... why does life have to be so expensive Q-Q)

Blog Post #4: Financially Speaking

Financially Speaking

The total of my future expenses each year are $44,765.  I know this is logical because my primary sources for information are my parents and Bureau Statistics. Also from pillow.com/homes/for-rent, extension.lastate.edu/foodsaving/page/what-you-should-spend, and money.cnn.com/calculator/retirement-need/. This does not include expenses for a family. It's only me as a single.
  • According to http://www1.salary.com/Surgeon-Salary.html, I can likely count on making $351,794 each year in my future job as a surgeon.  My education/training to get that job will cost $419,738 total for all years of training.

  • I want to save $12,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and $ for retirement each year.  If I save $20,000 for retirement each year, by the time I am 65 years old I will have $600,000 plus interest.

Comparing my future income and expenses makes me think….
of a lot question like How am I going to reach this plan? (it makes my mind spin). Also, the money to become a surgeon is a lot. This makes me think that I need to find a part time job or something. Also, I want to live happy and comfortable. I need to budget the money I earn. Probably, I should start saving now for college and med-school.

Expenses and Financial Planning

  • The total of my future expenses each year is $50,000.  I know this is logical because my primary sources for information are the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It suggests that the average cost of living is 20,000 per person per year, but I horseback ride and I live in California so I added more to my average cost of living.
  • According to salary.com I can likely count on making $300,000 each year in my future job as a dermatologist.  My education/training to get that job will cost $200,000 total for all years of training.
  • I want to save $25,000 for my rainy day fund each year, and $25,000 for retirement each year.  If I save $25,000 for retirement each year, by the time I am 65 years old I will have $875,000 plus interest.
  • Comparing my future income and expenses makes me think that I should carefully plan how to spend my money so I can prepare for retirement and extra costs of living.
