Blog #2

Hello people of the inter webs!
Sarah is here (or not depending on  your definition of 'here') and ready to write my blog post nombre deux and as you can see I am, once again, having fun with this mandatory blog.
Current location: On a plane heading back home (curse you lack internet or cellular service *waves fist passionately* )

The topic of this week's blog is, drum roll,  two aspects of work readiness in which we have demonstrated, so far, in our internship, and one aspect we need to work on.

An aspect which I believe I have demonstrated, greatly, is professionalism. When we were given our Work Readiness Certification Survey Rubric one can take notice that there are three different categories and I believe that I have succeeded in all three categories.

When it comes to demonstrating promptness I have been on time for my internship every day something visible on my time sheet, except for the first day which I had to talk to Amber, our supervisor, for around ten minuets before I signed in causing myself appear late. One day I even left the house early because I believed traffic to be terrible but accidentally showed up a half hour early! When Amber offered me to leave a half hour early I declined and stayed four and a half hours that day!!!

When it comes to avoiding absentees I have failed yet succeeded at the same time. My family has a yearly trip to the south side of Chicago to visit my Grandma, due to that I have missed two days of my internship which I would have normally worked. Yet during my orientation I wrote down the days I would be missing on my form and gave to them and a week before I left I went to my supervisor and verbally expressed/reminded her of my absents to come. Yet I still left Chicago earlier then my family so that I wouldn't miss my class (this class), causing me to embark on my four hour plane ride on my lonesome (Oh woe is me, yet luckily my plane is filled 90% with awesome Deadheads).

Lastly, when it comes to Professionalism at least, is the maintenance of hygiene and grooming. Since my first day of my intern I have shown up in an ironed collard shirt (shirt used with a suit) and nice pair of jeans, although this is my everyday apparel anyway (ask Annabel, I wear this everyday at school) which is appropriate due to the, mostly, lack of dress code. As for hygiene I tend to carry around mouth fresheners (Cinnamon mints, mmmmm spicy) in my pocket daily for my breath after lunch, along with my everyday ,normal hygiene (brushing, mouth wash, etc.).

For my second trait, I demonstrate dedication. I thoroughly complete all tasks given and when I am finished I promptly ask my supervisor what I need to do (help her with next), which most likely annoys her to all ends. Also I have, on multiple days, stayed a few minuets extra so to finish the task given, before I leave. One day when my shift was about to end I wheeled back/escorted two residents back to the Memory Care (MC) ward, individually, before I signed out.

Lastly, a trait I would need work on would be communication. This is needed towards the residents of Aegis, a home for seniors and those with with memory disorders (is this the right word for it???). There have been multiple times when I have had trouble communicating with the residents. This is due to the mixtures of bad listening, on my part,, hearing aids, on their side,. and mumbling, which both of us do. Although I believe this trait will improve the longer I am present there.

With that I say farewell, till I write on you again,
(Well, unless my plane crashes and I die before we land... jinx knock on wood... WAIT THERE IS NO WOOD PRESENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

  1. Sarah! I was on a plane, too :) It's good that you are so professional. That's something I need to work on a bit.
