Blog Three: Majors and Possible Careers

I plan on majoring in both nutrition and food science. People with a nutrition major can go into dietetics and become dietitians. Food scientists can be involved in product development. Both majors can delve into research relating to nutrition and the impact food has.

Dietitians working in the average hospital make about $57,000 per year. This number does vary state to state. Some states like California and New York tend to pay more because of a higher living cost and different values. Overall, the average pay does stay above $50,000. To become a dietitian, people need to get a bachelors degree in dietetics and then complete a dietetic internship. After this, they would have to take a test to become a registered dietitian. They could go on to graduate school if they wanted to pursue a more advanced clinical career or research. Dietitians tend to be good at working with others and need to be empathetic when working with patients. They need to act confidently so that they seem like a reliable authority.

Product developers tend to make about $42,3819 to $97,553 per year. There might be some regional changes, but the major differences would lie in the size of the company they work for. Companies such as Nestle are large enough that they tend to pay more. If it is a large company, the wages may stay the same in different locations or there may be a large central location where all the food scientists work together. People can start working with just a bachelors degree, but a masters degree or higher is often needed to get a better job. Product developers need to be able to think outside the box so that they can think of new creations. They also may need to be logical so that their creations will be liked by the public and so that they can work in a lab setting.

Food researchers can research the nutrition of certain food and they have on people. They make about $67,000 per year. There are differences of about $10,000 from state to state. Food researchers tend to need at least a masters degree and can find even more work if they have a PhD. Food researchers need to be diligent and logical in their lab settings to avoid mistakes and make sure their procedures are as accurate as possible. They also need to be friendly so that they can work with other scientists.
