Blog 3: After High School

After graduation high school next summer, I plan to go to college. Right now, my first choice for a major is biology or physiology...but I've also thought about other majors including psychology.

Pharmacist:
Average pay: $77,050 (annually)
Education: This job only requires one year of science studies as an undergraduate; and then must go on to pharmacy school for 4 years to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree, or 6 years to obtain a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D). Depending on the situation desired for the job, either a one month internship, or a longer residency is required as well.
Traits for pharmacists: Must have good communication skills, and judgement. Also be able to work independently or collaboratively. Pharmacists need to be able to work under pressure, have high integrity, and have the want to help patients in such a way to provide their medications and drug facts.

Microbiologist:
Average pay: $67,790 (annually)
Locations: The best places for microbiology are right here in California, but there is also high employment and wages for it in several northeastern states including Massachusetts, New York, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
Education: Must have a Bachelors degree in microbiology and a graduate degree is also preferred for microbiologists.
Traits for microbiologists: Great analytical and interpretive skills, understanding of microbiology and virology, ability to work in a team, diplomacy, good communication skills.

Genetics Counselor:
This career can be very rewarding but also quite stressful as you help people by counseling them through decisions regarding health, and genetic disorders.
Average pay: $71,100 (annually)
Education: Psychology and Biology both are acceptable undergraduate majors for this career; and also at least a masters degree in genetics counseling is required. Exams have to be passed for the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
Traits for Genetic Counselors: Good communication skills, skills in interpersonal/counselor assessment of clients, ability to think critically, and you must be ethical when dealing with many different people regarding tough situations for clients.

  1. I never really heard about what a genetics counselor is. It sounds quite interesting when you describe it, and I agree that you need good communication for it.
