Blog #3: After High School

In college I want to major in Anatomy and Physiology. I know that I want to go to Medical School, and I find interest in most sciences. I have always been fascinated with the human body and love learning about it. It also relates to the pre-requisite classes for attending med school.

1. Surgeon
  • The annual salary for surgeons in the United States does not depend so much on geographic location, but it depends mainly on the company/organization you work for and the surgical specialty. However, the average salary of a surgeon is around $351,794 (in the US).
  • The education path for becoming a surgeon is very long. It requires 4 years undergrad with completion of prerequisites for med school, 4 years of medical school, 5-7 years of residency in a hospital (length depends on specialty), and one year fellowship.
  • Personality traits- assertive, sympathetic, thorough, diligent, attention to detail, competitive, conscientious.
2. Anesthesiologist
An anesthesiologist is in charge of all the medicine and anesthesia given to a patient before, during, and after surgery. During the surgery, the anesthesiologist monitors the patient's vitals, and gives them the appropriate medicine.
  • Like a surgeon, the annual salary doesn't really depend on the state. It more depends on the hospital or organization. In the United States, the average annual salary is $300,000, but with experience and anesthesiologist can expect to earn up to $450,000.
  • The education path is long as well. 4 years undergrad, 4 years medical school, only 3 years of residency, and usually one year fellowship.
  • Personality traits- intuitive, attention to detail, calm, persistent, flexibility, independence.
3. Emergency Physician
An Emergency Physician is a doctor who works in the Emergency Room, and cares for trauma cases and patients who come in with emergent problems.
  • The average annual salary of an emergency physician in the US is around $300,000. This does depend on geographic location; different states and different hospitals pay differently.
  • The education to become an emergency physician is 4 years of undergrad with med school prerequisites, 4 years med school, and 3-4 years of ER doctor residency.
  • Personality traits- disciplines, leadership skills, decisive, intelligent, persistent, confident.
