Blog #3: Option 1 -- Possible Majors and Jobs

I know I want to go to college after high school, and I already have an idea about the majors I want to take. I definitely want to endeavor in the sciences, and I am thinking about Biology, Physiology, mathematics, and even English Literature, which is unrelated to my future career, but it could be an interesting course to take! I love learning about the body, how it works, anatomical systems, and how we respond to external stimuli. In addition, I want to go to medical school in order to become a pediatrician. For the purpose of this entry, I researched different medical jobs that require a focus in Biology or the other courses I mentioned.

1. Pediatrician

  •  Education: Aspiring pediatricians typically earn a Bachelor's degree in biology, math, physics, or chemistry. Then, after passing the MCAT, they undergo four years of medical school. The last two years of med. school will be focusing on clinical rotations. After, they will complete three years of a Residency and 2-4 years of a fellowship.
  • Average Pay: The average pay of a pediatrician is $175,00, and $135,000 for a pediatrician out of residency.
  • Geographic Pay: Salaries in South American and European countries will be less than in the United States, ranging from $50,000 to $100,000.
  • Personality: Pediatricians tend to be outgoing, comfortable, easy-going, and good-natured.
2. Pediatric Sports Medicine Specialist
  • I found this one to be interesting, simply because I love sports (running) and learning about the processes that are bodies undergo when experiencing extreme exercise.
  • Education:  These specialists require a B.A in Biology, Physiology, Anatomy, math, or chemistry. Four years of medical school, after passing the MCAT; three years of a residency; and 1-2 years of a fellowship.
  • Average Pay: The average pay for Sports Specialists is around $205,000.
  • Geographic Pay: Sports Specialists are paid somewhat more than the United States in very few European countries, but less in South American countries.
  • Personality: Sports Specialists tend to be focused, outgoing, and comfortable around patients.
3. Physician
  • Education:  Physicians typically receive a B.A in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or mathematics. Four years of medical school are required, as well as 3-7 years of a residency, and 1-3 years of a fellowship.
  • Average Pay: Physicians are generally paid $190,000.
  • Geographic Pay: Like previous results, Physicians are typically paid more in the U.S than in the majority of the countries in Europe and South America. These salaries range from $80,000 to $100,000.
  • Personality:  Physicians tend to be empathetic, respectful, confident, outgoing, and comfortable around patients.
